Where to find it

Open Website settings → SEO. Link Guard is a card under Redirects. Opening the card for the first time queues a first check. After that it runs every 7 days.

Choose Check now to run it yourself. You can do this once every 10 minutes. You need permission to write content. Reading the results needs permission to read content.

What it checks

  • Live posts only, newest first, up to 1,000 posts.
  • Links that start with http:// or https://. Relative links are checked against the post’s address. A #fragment is ignored. Links that hold a user name or password are skipped.
  • Up to 500 different links per run. CMSKite counts the rest and tells you only the first ones were checked.
  • Each link is requested with GET, and CMSKite does not read the body. The request says CMSKite-LinkGuard/1.0 (+https://cmskite.com).
  • A link times out after 10 seconds. A run stops after 8 minutes.
  • Up to 6 sites are checked at once, one link at a time per site.
  • Private addresses and unusual ports are never requested.

Reading the results

Use the tabs All, Broken and Unverified. Each finding names the link and up to 5 posts that use it.

TabReasonsWhat to do
BrokenNot found (404), Removed (410), the domain does not exist, connection refusedFix or remove the link
UnverifiedAccess denied (401, 403), Too many requests (429), Server error (5xx), Request refused (other 4xx), timeout, certificate problem, too many redirects, network errorOpen the link yourself. These may only block robots
Link Guard shows a link as unverified when the site might be blocking a robot. It does not call these links broken.
