Backups

CMSKite makes a backup of your website every week. You can also make one at any time and download it as a JSON file.

Where to find it

Open Website settings → General and find the backups card. Each backup shows its status (Ready or Failed), how it started (Weekly or On request), the number of posts and its size, and a Download button.

Choose Back up now to make one yourself. You can do this once every 15 minutes.

What is in a backup

  • Every post, with its status, translations and body. That includes drafts.
  • Categories, tags and authors.
  • Records of your media files. The image files themselves are not in the backup.
  • Your website’s details and settings.

A backup is a gzipped JSON file, encrypted and stored in your website’s media storage.

Limits

  • CMSKite keeps the latest 30 backups.
  • A backup holds up to 50,000 posts. A bigger blog gives an incomplete backup, and CMSKite marks it.
  • A backup that would be over 200 MB fails.
  • A backup can fail because the content could not be read, it is too large, or it could not be written to storage. The row says which.

Restoring

You can download a backup. CMSKite has no restore button. To move posts back in, use Import and export or Export your data.

Downloading needs permission to change the website. Backups are part of some plans. If yours does not include them, the card says so and links to Plans.
