Changing the address

Open Website settings → Hosted blog. The address is 3 to 40 lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens. You can also set the blog’s title, a short description and its accent colour there. Changes show within a minute.

Changing the address breaks links people already have to the old one. Pick it early and keep it.

How it works with your own website for SEO

Before your website is connected, the free link is your blog as far as search engines are concerned: its posts can rank on their own. Link to it from your website, your Google Business Profile or your social profiles: links are how search engines find it.

Once your own site shows the posts (we see the two-line embed load on your site, or your site reads posts through the API), every post page on the free link gets a canonical link pointing to the same post on your site. That tells Google your site is the real home of the post, so the credit goes to your domain and the two never compete. From then on the free link’s sitemap lists only its front page.

Wix. Wix shows pasted code inside a frame, so search engines file the posts under your free link instead. Link to the free link from your Wix menu so they find it.

Using your own domain

The free link cannot be moved onto your own domain: there is no setting to point blog.yourbusiness.com at it. To have the blog on your domain, add it to your website instead: paste the two-line embed on a page of your site, or have your developer use the API. Your posts then live at your own addresses, and the free link stays as a backup that sends the SEO credit to your site.
