Slug generator

Type a post title and get the slug, the last part of the post’s address. It runs in your browser; nothing you type is sent anywhere.

English, Hindi (Devanagari), Portuguese, Spanish: accents are dropped and Hindi is spelled in Latin letters.

Your slug

…

How it works

  • Lower case, letters and digits only. Everything else (spaces, punctuation, symbols) becomes one hyphen, and hyphens at the ends are trimmed.
  • Accents are dropped: “São Paulo — guia 2026” becomes sao-paulo-guia-2026.
  • Hindi is spelled the way people type it in Latin letters: “शादी के लिए केक कितने दिन पहले ऑर्डर करें” becomes shaadi-ke-lie-kek-kitne-din-pahle-ordar-karen. Hindi spelling has exceptions this does not know, so read the result and fix a word if needed.
  • At most 180 characters. A title with nothing usable in it (only emoji, or a script we do not spell in Latin letters yet) gets a short code like t-1a2b3c4d.

This is the same rule the CMSKite editor uses when it suggests a slug for a new post, so what you see here is what a post would get.

What makes a good slug

Google’s advice for addresses is short: use readable words rather than ID numbers, separate them with hyphens rather than underscores, and use your readers’ language, transliterated where that applies. A few habits follow from it:

  • Keep the words that say what the post is about and drop the rest. how-to-keep-sourdough-fresh says as much as how-to-keep-your-homemade-sourdough-bread-fresh-for-a-whole-week.
  • Leave the year out unless the post is truly about that year; otherwise the address goes stale before the post does.
  • Do not change a slug after publishing without a redirect from the old address. Links and search results point at the old one.
  • Hindi or Latin letters? Both work in an address. A Devanagari slug is percent-encoded and shows as a long run of %E0%A4… when copied; a Latin spelling is readable everywhere, which is why the editor suggests one.

Questions

Does the slug affect my ranking?
A little at most. Google reads the words in an address, and a readable slug helps people decide to click a link they see shared. What ranks a post is the post. Pick a clear slug, then leave it alone.
Should the slug repeat the whole title?
No. Keep the few words that say what the post is about. Short slugs are easier to read, share and type.
Can I use a Hindi slug in Devanagari?
Yes, Google accepts addresses in your readers’ script. The catch is that a Devanagari address turns into percent-encoded characters when it is copied into chats and emails, so many Hindi blogs use a Latin spelling instead. This tool gives you that spelling.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. The slug is made in your browser.
